What is Postman?

Postman is a program that helps developers design, build, and test APIs (Application Programming Interfaces). It provides a convenient interface for creating HTTP requests and interacting with APIs. With Postman, developers can send requests, view responses, and test various API endpoints and parameters. It is widely used in the software development industry to simplify the API development and testing process.

When using Postman to design, build, and test APIs, you may need to configure a proxy server for your requests. A proxy acts as an intermediary between Postman and the destination server, providing an additional layer of security and handling HTTP(S) responses on your behalf.

Configuring proxy settings in Postman

To configure proxy settings in Postman, you have two options: use your system's proxy settings, or configure proxy settings in Postman manually.

Using system proxy settings:

  1. Download and open Postman and go to settings (⚙️) > Settings > Proxy.

  3. After making changes, click the Save button and restart Postman.

Builder can now send requests through a proxy server.

To use the system proxy for Postman Builder queries, follow these steps:

  1. Go to the section "Proxy configurations for sending requests" and enable the option "Use system proxy".
  2. Optionally, you can enable the "Respect environment variables" option to use the system settings for proxy types.
NOTE: Make sure "Add your own proxy configuration" is disabled so that Postman doesn't ignore the system proxy and use your own proxy instead.

Common Postman proxy configuration issues

If you're having problems with your proxy server while using Postman, here are some common solutions:

Missing proxy settings - Make sure you have the latest version of Postman installed and check all the proxy settings mentioned in this guide.

407 Proxy Authentication Error - Make sure you have entered the username and password in the system or user proxy settings, and check the proxy configuration in your operating system.

Missing postman-proxy-ca.crt - Install OpenSSL on your system and restart Postman to resolve this issue.
